Micro cars were very popular in Italy during the middle of the 20th century. Some fine examples include the Fiat 500 and the much forgotten BMW Isetta. The BMW Isetta is an incredibly cool-looking mod car. This would be great on the streets of Rome! The egg-shaped Isetta can be said to be the very best microcar of its time. Certainly it is the archetypal "bubble car", and is today recognized and loved worldwide.

The origins of the BMW Isetta were in Milan, Italy at the scooter and refrigerator company of Iso SpA, run by Renzo Rivolta. The BMW Isetta was called Isetta, or "little Iso". The BMW Isetta was a startling, totally unconventional design that caused a furor at its introduction in Turin in November 1953. From this influential debut grew a number of licensed branches worldwide, the main one being BMW in Germany.

The BMW Isetta was seen by BMW as filling a gap between their motorcycle range and the luxury 501 models. The car was redesigned to take the 250cc 4-stroke engine from the R-25 motorcycle, and the front suspension was changed. The finished car was announced in April 1955 and went into production shortly after. The quirky little Motocoupe as it was called by BMW, became the dream of the workingman, and by November 1955, ten thousand had been built. In February 1956, came a 300cc motor. In September of that year the redesigned "sliding-window" model made its debut, looking altogether more harmonious. 22,543 examples of the "egg" rolled off the line in this, its biggest year ever.

This beautiful minimal floor lamp is an icon of modern lighting. The Spider lamp was designed by Joe Colombo in 1965 but is still in production today. Joe Colombo was one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. Joe Colombo was one of the quintessential designers, together with Verner Panton, of mid century modern furniture. The furniture and lighting he created was practical, comfortable and pleasing for the eye. Joe Colombo is also responsible for the design of the super-functional Boby Trolley. The classic Spider is the timeless table lamp par excellence. Joe Colombo used this lamp in his own home as well. The joint in the arm makes it possible to pivot, turn or adjust the height of the reflector in one easy step.

The Spider lamp series includes the Spider table lamp and Spider floor lamp. The Spider lamp is a single lighting fixture designed for a special horizontal spot light and was assembled - thanks to a melamine joint - in a variety of situations (home/office) and on different supports (table, floor, wall, ceiling), thus coining the concept of a "family" of lamps. The stamped plate finished with white, black, orange or brown baking paint, sliding along a polished chrome stem, seemed a foretaste of the future.

The idea behind Lighting fixture Spider lamp was suggested to Joe Colombo by a new type of onion bulb newly produced at that time by Philips: the silvered Cornalux. The lamp-object of Joe Colombo's project was therefore born as a frame for the illuminating body which can freely direct the light because it is part protected by silvering.

In the technical part of the project the designer not only creates a system of illuminating devices which range from the table to ceiling versions but presents a whole series of solutions which could represent a real manual on industrial design. From the body of the diffuser, cut to leave the bulb in full view, and allow it to be directed along the axis of the stand to the design of the painted bases which highlight the dynamic shape, the dynamic nature of the object to make a technical device like this an attractive part of the furnishing.

We love these glass birds which were designed by Italian glass blower Alessandro Pianon for Vistosi in Murano Italy during the early 1960's. These exquisite Murano glass birds feature fine details and are made with hand blown glass and copper. Each stands about 12.25" tall and they are worth their weight in gold (perhaps even more).


These Alessandro Pianon glass birds are no longer produced and have become wanted collectors items. Wright20 will have three examples of the Alessandro Pianon glass birds in their modern design auction. Each bird has an estimate of $2,000 to $3,000, so if you ever find these in Europe at an antique market, don't think twice.

Kivik Art Center Sweden

The Kivik Art Center in Sweden features very minimal 'Donald Judd style' concrete building blocks. Designed by David Chipperfield and Antony Gormley. David Chipperfield is the designer of the famous Chandelier from FontanaArte.

The pavilion, which was constructed in only two months, is a sculpture entirely in concrete. Formed of three interlocked 100 m3 volumes – ‘The Cave’, ‘The Stage’ and ‘The Tower’ – the pavilion offers three different ways of experiencing the nature and landscapes around Kivik.

‘The Cave’ – a solid, dormant space in the base of the sculpture where one can rest on a wall-fixed bench, offers the enclosed feeling of being in the dark forest. Stairs then take the visitor up to the first floor – ‘The Stage’ – a horizontal volume open to the landscape, where one looks out but is also exposed. The third volume – ‘The Tower’ – takes the visitor up spiral stairs to a platform almost 18 metres above the ground, where one is rewarded with a spectacular view over the trees towards the Baltic Sea.

Kivik Pavilions is a project that combines architecture with art and design. Fundamental are issues of environmental solutions, a symbiosis of the landscape and the pavilion, local materials, and corporate partnership with industries in the region. The 2007 pavilion, called ‘Mother Ship’, was designed by Norwegian architects Snohetta, in conjunction with the photographer Tom Sandberg.

The Wiggle chair by Frank Gehry remains to this day one of our most beloved design chairs. This cardboard chair is remarkably sturdy and could last a life time (or longer). The Wiggle chair is a single fluid shape ingeniously sculpted into a stunning piece of furniture. In the early 1970's, nearing the end of the oil crisis, a trend developed for less expensive and lightweight materials. This led Frank Gehry to experiment with cardboard furniture. Designer and architect Frank Gehry developed the cardboard furniture line which he named "Easy Edges". Frank Gehry used multiple layers of corrugated cardboard glued together to make it strong enough to be practical. The Wiggle Chair is designed using this innovative material.
