Trying to make a pretty thorough list of the most beautiful modern electronics that were every designed is a task you can only dream about. We love these vintage electronics which we first started to collect at the NYC flea market on 22nd and 23rd street in the late 1990's.

A popular classic remains the Panasonic R-72 Toot-A-Loop AM radio. Part-radio and part-fashion accessory, the Toot-A-Loop was wearable technology. Worn around the wrist like a bracelet, or carried like a purse, the Toot-A-Loop was shaped like a tapered doughnut, twisting open to reveal the tuning dial on the inside. The AM-only radio also came with fun stickers so users could customize it. In the early 1970s, the Apollo 11 had just landed on the moon, signaling the start of the new space age, Volkswagen Beetles ruled the roads and rollerskates were a must-have. The Toot-a-Loop fashion radio, with its objet d'art theme, unusual design and fun colors, embodied the sense of fun and youthfulness of prevailing pop culture.

Another design icon is the Panasonic R70 Panapet. The quirky 'Panapet', produced by Panasonic in 1970 to commemorate the World Expo in Osaka, was a ball-shaped radio that hung on a chain. Two chrome-plated dials on the surface controlled tuning and volume, and the tuning display itself was set into the ball. Initially released as an AM-only radio, customers could choose from red, yellow, white, blue and avocado green versions. First exhibited at the World Expo in Osaka, the Panapet perfectly captured the playful pop spirit of the early 1970s. With its boldly futuristic spherical design and space age styling, it was an instant hit with the young and youthful-at-heart when it burst onto the scene.

While it may be impossible to collect them all, you can always come back to this blog and dream away. Many more to come so check this blog once in a while, we will keep adding new finds.

Most of these exceptionally designed electronic gems stem from the period of the late 1960's and early 1970's. Unfortunately we do not know many of the designer's names. They were almost always designed by the in-house design teams of the respectable companies. All of these collectible electronics are out of production, of course. Try your luck at flea markets in Europe or Japan or visit online auctions.
