Kaufmann Desert House
Palm Springs, California

Anatomy of a classic: the iconic modern house designed by Richard Neutra for Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. in 1946. Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. is the same man who commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build another famous icon of modern architecture: Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater). This Kaufmann gentleman sure had an eye for quality! The house that Richard Neutra created for Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. in Palm Springs is a perfectionist masterpiece of modern architecture, one of the most iconic modern houses in Palm Springs. And we appreciate the way it blends in with its surroundings. We love Richard Neutra's desert landscaping for the Kaufmann House which made use of these beautiful natural rounded boulders (for those interested in finding the same type of boulders, after a long search we finally found krcrock.com , make sure to ask for the 'Navajo Boulders'). The desert landscape of the Kaufmann House is further enhanced by "mostly" drought tolerant plants including Yucca's, Yellow Desert Flowers, Washingtonia Robusta (Mexican Fan Palm), Dasylirion Longissimum (Mexican Grass), etc. Richard Neutra was a master in using nature as art. His architecture and the desert landscaping truly blend together seamlessly. What a great composition! A real work of art. We love the desert landscaping at Richard Neutra's architectural modernist masterpiece, the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs California. The house is privately owned and it is not open for visitors (hopefully this will change in the future). But you can certainly drive by to admire the landscaping.  Please know that the owners (and the Santa-look-alike caretaker) are very protective so do not encroach on their property.  Please respect their privacy.
