American House 08
Modern Pre-Fab Architecture

What we think: Bravo! William Massie may possibly be the brightest new American talent we have seen in many years. Perfectly balanced, like a modern version of the case-study houses from the 1950's. We look forward to seeing new work by William Massie in the future. We encourage William to think about the development of 3-bedroom pre-fab structures for families in the future. No doubt, we will be first in line to sign up! William Massie represents a fresh new wave of modern pre-fab we have all been waiting for!

American House 08 is a prefabricated, one-of-a-kind, single-family home by William E. Massie, Architect-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art. The home is prepared and ready for delivery to your home site anywhere in the continental United States.

The house is an approximately 2,500 square foot, exceptional and unique two bedroom, two and one-half bath home. In the great tradition of American modern homes, this dwelling is well organized, open and stands ready to collaborate with its new owner in the building of beautiful memories. Because of its steel, glass and structurally insulated panel construction, it would be at home in many environments - perched on a mountainside, situated on the edge of a lake, standing alone in the middle of a meadow or presiding on the rooftop of an existing urban building. American House 08 has been constructed with the environment in mind. One of the most sustainable aspects of the house is its unique ability to ventilate the hot afternoon air by opening a skylight in the shower and introducing cooler air through its operable windows, allowing its occupants to reduce the use of the forced-air system supplying heat and air-conditioning.

American House 08 is built of a series of structural steel frames with integrated structural insulated panels as its infill. The building has been designed, engineered and built to be placed on a 2,000 square foot permanent foundation. The owners choice of a crawl space, full basement or basement and garage combination are possible.

The building has been disassembled, boat –wrapped and prepared in its component parts ready for immediate shipping and delivery to your property. How? Once the adequate building permits, footings and foundations are in place, the building will be immediately shipped on nine flatbed trucks, crane-lifted into place and assembled as they arrive. Electrical and plumbing components will be connected, made operational and inspected by local trades. After a 30 day period of finish work joining all the components seamlessly, the building in its totality will be yours to enjoy for a lifetime.

Room-by-room descriptions:

Home office: Connected to the master bedroom is a home office allowing you to extend your weekend or telecommute from this building. The office has integrated custom file drawers and shelving backed with a sustainable cork wall to pin notes, memos or photos.

Master Bedroom: A large master bedroom with a sliding door which allows you to open this room up to the main living space. The bedroom includes an integrated, cantilevered king-size bed and cabinetry including a cherry paneled wall defining a sitting area. The dominant, unbroken wall of the master bedroom is back-lit by windows above and below allowing for a unique gallery surface for either paintings or flat-screen media.

Master bath/Walk-in Closet: A well-organized walk-in closet with integrated storage and the possibility for a stacking washer and dryer, lead to the master bath closable water closet and an independent, free-standing white ceramic, penny-tile shower and tub enclosure – one of the greatest showers you will ever see or use!

Guest bedroom: The guest bedroom with private bath and shower finished will white ceramic tile. The integrated, guest queen-size bed projects out of a beautiful cherry plywood wall. Its panels sutured together with a unique puzzle-piece joint and punctured by elliptical light-wells.

Kitchen: The kitchen is a large and efficient galley-style eliminating any wasted space. The kitchen is lit from above and below the cabinets on the exterior wall by the windows naturally defused light. The solid stainless steel countertop marks the datum of the white cabinets and integrated appliances below. The upper cabinets are finished with a unique computer-generated, elliptical, sponge-like pattern, which never repeats itself and can be read as a pattern of perfect circles from a few feet away in the dining area.

Living/Dining Room: The living and dining rooms are combined in one large and magical room filled constantly with a subtle and sometimes dramatic play of light. Two large, complex, curving surfaces allow the natural light from floor-to-ceiling flanking glass walls to move across their surfaces as the light changes throughout the day. As night falls, LED lights in the floor bask these ultra-smooth surfaces and produce a quiet contemplative lantern-like light. At a moments notice the sedate quality of the living and dining room can be transformed by the integrated video projection and AV system showing your favorite television show, film or ambient light work of art.

Entry: The front entry of the house lands you into main living space which is anchored by a small sitting area with wood-burning fireplace and cherry plywood walls.

The purchase price includes: all kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, built-in furniture including beds, heating and ventilating system, primary audio and visual integrated components and delivery, oversight and reassembly of structure within 1200 miles of Detroit, Michigan.
