Eero Aarnio Bubble Chair

The original Eero Aarnio Bubble Chair was designed by Eero Aarnio in 1968. The Eero Aarnio Bubble chair is currently produced by Adelta. This modern floating chair is one of the great icons of space age design from the late 1960's.

The Bubble chair gives a new, extraordinary idea of what a rocking chair can be. It is amazing how comfortable one can sit a in such a shiny, oversized welcoming chair and rocking side-, back- and forwards.

Eero Aarnio about his Bubble Chair: "After I had made the Ball Chair I wanted to have the light inside it and so I had the idea of a transparent ball where light comes from all directions. The only suitable material is acrylic which is heated and blown into shape like a soap bubble. Since I knew that the dome-shaped skylights are made in this way I contacted the manufacturer and asked if it would be technically possible to blow a bubble that is bigger than a hemisphere. The answer was yes. I had a steel ring made, the bubble was blown and cushions were added and the chair was ready. And again the name was obvious: Bubble!

Designed in 1968, this hanging acrylic sphere features a silver leather removable cushion and hangs from the ceiling at a height which the owner determines by the length of the chain.

"There is no nice way to make a clear pedestal" Eero Aarnio notes. That is the lucky reason why the Bubble hangs from the ceiling and floats in midair. Like the Ball Chair the Bubble Chair also impresses the user (the inside sitting person) by the special acoustic. The Bubble swallows the sounds and you feel inside in a pleasant way isolated, even when you are at a crowded place.

Bing Bong was the name given by Asko. The american importer Charles Stendig called it Bubble chair.

This name characterizes the manufacturing prozess: bloated to its form like a soapbubble, to the point. And under this name Aarnio wants the chair to be commercialized. At the end of the 80's Faith Popcorn created the term of "cocooning". The trend of retiring to the domestic is still holding on and the Bubble fits perfect in this mood. This fact and the 70's revival are also a reason for the boom of Aarnios furnitures in advertising, music videos, movies and fashion magazines today. Celebrities like Daryl Hannah, Donnatella Versace or Nina Hagen enjoyed the Bubble on foto shootings and it becomes more and more famous. This roomy acrylic sphere is suspended from the ceiling at the desired height of the owner. The Bubble chair resembles the womb like environment of the Ball Chair, yet allows the sitter to clearly see in all directions. Truly a conversation piece.
