World's Most Expensive Diamond

If you work for Goldman Sachs & Co and your last name ends in Blankfein you may consider this a perfect opportunity to give some credit to your spouse for all the stress she endured.  So if you are one of the last tycoons standing with plenty of money to blow, here is your chance before Congress can take it away.  Surprise your loved one with something more unique than a Lexus with a Red Bow.  This may not be 'the' most expensive diamond ring, but hey, it comes close.  This double rock has a high estimate of $6,871,575.00 (that is $6 million dollars).  This one-of-a-kind internally flawless ring was designed by Alexandre Reza, the celebrated Paris-based jeweler.  During his career, which spanned four decades, he assembled one of the largest, most diverse and precious collections of gems in the world.  This ring is one of the highlights from his creations.

Of cross over design, set with a fancy vivid blue pear-shaped diamond weighing 5.02 carats and a pear-shaped diamond weighing 5.42 carats, to a platinum mount, size 52, signed A. Reza, French assay and maker's marks.

Of course, you can always buy some nice flowers for your girl which may very well make her 'just as happy'.  At least, if she's the right kind of girl your mother told you about.

Andy Warhol Self Portrait

Sotheby's will be auctioning off this oversized Andy Warhol Self Portrait. The work has an estimate of $10 to $15 million. Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction on May 12th 2010 at Sotheby's New York.

Andy Warhol's monumental Self Portrait from 1986 is a powerful image pulsates with energy conveyed through its confrontational frontality. Emerging from an inky black aura and shaded with deep contours, this most recognizable artist of all time simultaneously appears and disappears in front of our eyes. As an artistic genre, self- portraiture by a painter is a traditionally evocative subject for critical study.

When the artist is Warhol, the theme is especially rich since the slippage between public and private identity was a central motif in his art as in his life. Warhol's radically innovative approach to subject matter and to artistic technique was ideal for investigation of the self-portrait and he would revisit the genre throughout his oeuvre. Warhol's celebrity centered on the self-invented and intriguing public persona that he created during interviews and public events. Among his images of the famous that established Pop art in the 1960s, he also became an icon in his own visual repertoire. Belonging to his 1986 self-portraits, the last before his untimely death, this painting encapsulates Warhol's attitude toward presenting his outer self, tempting us with the thought that he might finally let us glimpse his most intimate inner self.

Model as Muse

Model as Muse explores fashion’s reciprocal relationship to iconic beauties that represent the evolution and changing face of the feminine ideal. Featuring a brief historical overview of the phenomenon of the supermodel, the book begins in the early 20th century and continues to the present day. Dorian Leigh and Lisa Fonssagrives in the 1940s are joined in the 1950s by Dovima, Sunny Harnett, and Suzy Parker. They are followed by Jean “The Shrimp” Shrimpton and Twiggy in the 1960s and Lauren Hutton in the 1970s.

The 1980s witnessed such enduring personalities as Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and Linda Evangelista, while the 1990s brought on Kate Moss, whose edgy, street-inflected style has inspired not only fashion designers, editors, stylists, and photographers, but artists such as Chuck Close and Lucien Freud.

With an emphasis on styles from the 1950s onward, the book features designs from the great ready-to-wear and couture houses—Madame Grès, Christian Dior, and Balenciaga in the 1950s; Rudi Gernreich, Yves Saint Laurent, and Cardin in the 1960s; Giorgio di Sant’Angelo and Halston in the 1970s; Christian Lacroix, Versace, Comme des Garcons, and Calvin Klein in the 1980s; and Marc Jacobs, John Galliano, and Alexander McQueen in the 1990s.

Fred Astaire

The always graceful Fred Astaire.  No other man has influenced American style more profoundly than Fred Astaire.  Replacing the stiff-suited, aristocratic uniform of the day with his looser, more democratic look of tweed sport jackets and easy cut flannels, Astaire became a new model for the Century. Nonchalance, natural charm and effortlessness would now replace the pomp and circumstance of men s style that preceded it.

Nikon D3X 24.5-megapixel Camera

Even two years after it was released, the Nikon D3X camera remains hard to beat.  The D3X is a lean, mean, photographing machine and the flagship in Nikon's SLR camera range. The Nikon D3X was meticulously engineered for professional photographers whose assignments demand nothing less than the ability to capture extreme fidelity, detail and nuance in ways now made possible with the amazing D3X. Digital Photography Review stated that it is 'possibly the most compelling, capable and well-rounded professional digital SLR ever made'.

In the studio or on location, the Nikon D3X faithfully captures NEF (RAW) files that, when processed, are approximately 138 MB! Of course, neither a Nikon 24.5-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor nor 138 MB files are of value unless they deliver truly superior image quality. And in this regard, the new D3X exceeds expectations. Like its 12.1-megapixel D3 counterpart, the Nikon D3X features Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED image processing technologies teamed with the proprietary Nikon Scene Recognition System to ensure the utmost in image fidelity, low noise, faster, more accurate autofocus and amazing file processing speed that makes continuous shooting at up to five frames per second possible. In addition, the Nikon D3X’s ISO sensitivity range of 100 to 1600 (with Lo1, 50 and Hi 2 up to 6400) is mindful of the needs of photographers specializing in commercial, fashion and fine art photography.

Hermès Birkin Bag

"It's not a bag; it's a f'ng Birkin!" - Samantha Jones | Sex and the City

Hermès Birkin Bag, world's most expensive hand-built purse (I am sure Hermès dreads we use the word 'bag'...bag, bag, bag). Named after actress Jane Birkin. Birkin Bags have always been astronomically priced and they typically sell for $6,500.  But the world's most expensive Hermès Birkin Bag is this edition which is inlaid with diamonds.  Hold on to your hat, the asking price is $80,000.  That buys a house in plenty of parts in the world.  Hence, world's most expensive bag (although you cannot live in it).

World's Most Expensive Wines

Who says the French are bad in business? Château Pétrus is the preferred wine for big spenders. While the global credit crunch has forced many consumers to rein in spending, some just find it hard to say no to their favorite bottle of vin. Château Pétrus continues to sell for $1500 a bottle in current release. How many glasses are there in a bottle of wine? Depending on how much you pour, there are usually 5 glasses in one bottle. This would set you back pretty close to $300 for a glass (and we are not talking a full glass but half a glass). And prices tend to be higher, much higher, for better vintages. Take for example the 2005 Petrus which is already fetching over $8000 a bottle (for those of you who are still calculating, this is $1600 per glass). Gasp! Château Pétrus only produced 2400 12-bottle cases of this vintage. Limit your goods and prices go up, they must have thought.

Château Pétrus is without question one of the most expensive wines in the world. It is produced by a tiny little vineyard in the Bordeaux region of France, more precisely, the Pomerol Appellation. Château Pétrus has risen in the past 50 years from obscurity to being one of the most expensive of all wines. Before 1939, Château Pétrus was seen as a second-rate claret, not to be compared with the great wines of the Médoc, on the other side of the river Gironde. Lily-Paule Lacoste (previous manager who became close to becoming a billionaire before she lost most of her fortune) insisted her wine was good enough to be compared with the best. She began to charge accordingly and generated a mystique, which was magnified by the praise of the American critic Robert Parker.  And the rest is history.

Pendant Lights by Louis Poulsen

We love these newly released PH50 lamps from Louis Poulsen.  Poul Henningsen designed the PH5 lamp for Louis Poulsen in 1958. And to celebrate this milestone, Louis Poulsen has introduced a special anniversary edition, the PH50 lamp. The PH50 lamp is identical in size to the PH5 lamp but comes in five attractive colors which were inspired by the 1950's. While the classic PH5 was designed with a matte finish, the PH50 is wet-painted in a high-gloss finish which reflects light off the colored shades.

Photography by Patrick Demarchelier

This photograph is one of our favorites, it has a very special Bilitish-type of vibe with its soft diffused glow.

The portraits, fashion and fine art images of photographer Patrick Demarchelier.

Fans of Patrick Demarchelier's work should check out his recent monograph.  It is the definitive guide to the career of one of the most prodigious fashion photographers of our time. From his earliest work at Harper's Bazaar to his now mythic collaboration with Vogue, Patrick Demarchelier has single-handedly redefined the fashion photograph and the fashion industry along with it. His celebrity portraits have shaped the public personae of figures ranging from Princess Diana to Madonna. Demarchelier is everywhere at once, with a photographic sensibility that is as iconic, incisive and as varied as his subject matter.

Published to coincide with the exhibition Patrick Demarchelier: Images et Mode a Paris at the Petit Palais, Paris, and featuring more than 400 of Demarchelier's most telling photographs, this volume provides an invaluable fashion reference point, all the while charting the course of our own cultural obsession with celebrity and beauty. All proceeds go to the charity Police--Action Solidaire.

Born outside Paris in 1943, Patrick Demarchelier relocated to New York in 1975, where he began his editorial career with Harper's Bazaar and Hearst Publications. His photographs appear regularly on the covers and in the pages of publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, among many others. He was the 2007 recipient of the Eleanor Lambert Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He continues to live and work in New York.

Exceptional in every way.
