Graphic Design by Bern Hill
Published circa 1950's

Bern Hill was a graphic designer and a painter. "At the end of 1949, General Motors' Electro-Motive Division embarked on a rather radical advertising campaign which included vertical format streamline style paintings for the covers of Railway Age [Magazine]" (Vintage Rails, January / February 1998, p. 64). Between 1950 and 1956 Hill created sixty-five paintings for the campaign. "Electro-Motive also produced a series of very high-grade posters of Hill's paintings that were overwritten by the marketing theme for that particular railroad . . . it is unknown if all 65 paintings were turned into posters. . . . Hill's assignment was to portray the 'feel' of each railroad in a scene that often captured the landscape of the individual road and gave the viewer the sense of that road's missions -- freight, passenger or switching" (Railroad Heritage, No. 6, 2002, p. 10).

A world renowned and recognized corporate icon, Air India's Maharaja was born in 1946, the creative genius of Air India's commercial director, Bobby Kooka, and Umesh Rao, an artist with the Mumbai branch of J. Walter Thompson Ltd. "The Maharaja began merely as a rich Indian potentate, symbolizing graciousness and high living. And somewhere along the line his creators gave him a distinctive personality, his outsized moustache, the striped turban and his aquiline nose . . . Air-India calls him the Maharaja for want of a better description. But his blood isn't blue. He may look like royalty, but he isn't royal . . . Today, this naughty, diminutive Maharaja of Air-India has become a world figure. He can be a lover boy in Paris, a sumo wrestler in Tokyo, a pavement artist, a Red Indian, a monk. He can effortlessly flirt with the beauties of the world. And most importantly, he can get away with it all. Simply, because he is the Maharaja." (The Chandigarh Tribune, July 17, 2005).

Lotus Eleven Series 1 Car

1956 Lotus Eleven Series 1 Sports-Racing Two-Seater

This Lotus 11 is not only one of the best known examples of the legendary Colin Chapman's most beautiful front-engined sports-racing car design but it is also a car which has been in its present ownership for no fewer than 30 years. During this period it has competed in more then 250 Historic sports car races on the world's leading motor racing circuits, including Silverstone, Goodwood, Brands Hatch, Snetterton, Donington Park and Oulton Park in the UK, plus the Nurburgring in Germany, the Monte Carlo street circuit in Monaco, Zolder and Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, Zandvoort in Holland, Vancouver in Canada, and at such American venues as Laguna Seca, Phoenix, Willow Springs, Portland, Tacoma and Palm Springs.

The car has been proved itself a Historic and Vintage racing front runner and winner. It took the checkered flag first at the pioneering Monaco Historic Grand Prix meeting of 1983, and it won its capacity class in the fondly-remember British Lloyds & Scottish Championship race series of 1981-83. It competed in the British Grand Prix support races of those years at both Brands Hatch and Silverstone, and set new class lap records at Brands Hatch and Donington Park.

It attracts high acclaim from the famously critical Victor Thomas, the highly-regarded British Lotus 11 Registrar, who explains that this is a very well-known and well regarded Historic sports-racing car which has been nicely restored from a very original 1956 example acquired by the present vendor in the UK during a period when the values of these machines was very low compared with modern times.

Most importantly, in common with many examples of the Lotus Eleven which were built in effect from kits of parts by enthusiastic 1950s club racers, the very original car then acquired did not have a chassis plate attached. Unless the cars had been road-registered as new, and contemporary UK purchase tax paid upon them, it was absolutely customary for sports-racing cars of that era not to bear formal chassis numbering. Unless the car was going to be taken abroad by serious international racers there were no Customs inspections to be survived, and there were numerous cases of British club racers simply using the engine number as their car's ID should they ever be sufficiently unfortunate to be stopped by the Police, and in those pre-computerized record-keeping days many simply applied the road registration license plate numbers of their everyday shopping street car!

We understand that in this case when the car was re-registered by the vendor under the UK serial 'XMA 818' the chassis serial no. '184' was adopted, since it was known to be missing from the list of surviving numbered Elevens. Victor Thomas now tells us that the original car bearing that chassis plate has emerged, but he is adamant that this in no way detracts from the original derivation of the car now offered here. "I am sure it's a real Eleven, from period, it's just that we have never been able to identify which one".

The immortal – and sublimely beautiful – Lotus Eleven was the 1100-1500cc sports-racing model which really established designer Colin Chapman's Lotus Engineering Company Ltd as a serious manufacturer of customer production competition cars. After some 150 Eleven 'Series 1' cars – such as this - had been produced, a 'Series 2' variant was introduced in the Spring of 1957. By the end of production during 1958, some 270 Lotus Elevens had been completed. They combined an extremely lightweight yet rigid multi-tubular spaceframe chassis designed by master-stressman Colin Chapman with the ageless aerodynamic bodywork styled by De Havilland Aeroplane Company aerodynamicist Frank Costin. In period the Lotus Elevens absolutely dominated the sports-racing class in which they competed, not only in their home market of Great Britain but also in the countries of Continental Europe, in the US, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand. For many enthusiasts the exquisitely proportioned Lotus Eleven is the epitome of the smaller-capacity class front-engined sports-racing car. Fitted most commonly with the 1100cc overhead-camshaft Coventry Climax 4-cylinder racing engine these cars are easy and inexpensive to prepare and maintain, and they are most definitely immensely enjoyable and rewarding cars to drive – not only in competition, but also on the public road. If ever there was a street car named desire – and one which is also begging for someone just to race the doors off it – it is this Lotus-Climax Eleven.

Pierre Paulin Flower Chair

Pierre Paulin Flower Chair

Every once in a while something comes along with lasting staying power. This something happens to be the gracious Paulin Flower Chair. The organic modern shape of this beautiful modern design chair is very fluid in form. Pierre Paulin's Flower Chair is like a sculpture, visually pleasing from all sides. Balanced, organic and beautiful to look at. Flower promises privacy yet conceals little. Its sheer and sexy silhouette makes it a worthy addition to any interior. Pierre Paulin's received widespread acclaim as a space age modern furniture designer. His modern furniture can be found at major museums across the world. Pierre Paulin designed the Flower Chair for Magis in Italy.

Pierre Paulin's Flower Chair is an injection-molded piece. This modern chair is made of clear transparent polycarbonate and features a fuchsia colored seat cushion, a favorite Pierre Paulin color. While plastic chairs sometimes feel a bit flimsy, this one weighs more than 20 pounds, so it has some heft. It wasn't easy to get right: Magis's founder, Eugenio Perazza, had to do at least ten prototypes, and he drove to Pierre Paulin's house in the French country side more than twenty times (for an estimated total of about 25,000 miles on the road).

Andy Warhol 200 One Dollar Bills

Andy Warhol: 200 One Dollar Bills

Richard Pryor: Brewster's Millions

Which one would you like to hang out with: Richard Pryor or Andy Warhol?

The case for becoming an artist or befriending an artist. Did you hear the story about the 200 pieces of $1 Dollar bills that magically turned into $8 to $12 Million Dollars? This is the story of Andy Warhol's 200 One Dollar Bills. A testament that anything is possible when the stars align. But to make the stars align, that is the trick...

200 One Dollar Bills. is the monumental masterpiece from Andy Warhol's first series of silkscreened paintings and is a powerful declaration of the genesis of Warhol’s major contribution to art history. Warhol had already revolutionized American art by restoring representation and objective imagery to painting in the startling guise of common, everyday objects such as Campbell’s Soup Cans, comics, magazine advertisements and newspaper headlines in late 1961 to early 1962. But the 'Pop Art' revolution was not complete until Warhol discovered the artistic technique that would give him the freedom to exploit his new approach to subject matter. Warhol responded to the post-war world's media and consumerist saturation by seeking a form of art that would remove the hand of the artist, creating the same sense of distance and disconnect that was emerging in the world around him. Earlier Warhol had painted projected images and used stencils and rubber stamps, as formalist experiments, but silk-screening would prove to be his perfect muse. Screening was a mechanical process, and represented an intervention between the artist and the canvas; but in his usual contradictory manner, Warhol would subvert his own intention of "mechanized art" by using the process to create an unending variety of images of both beauty and emotional impact, as well as ground-breaking influence. The series of "Dollar Bill" paintings were done in March-April 1962 and Warhol's first silkscreens were created from ink drawings he made on acetate, picturing the fronts and backs of one- and two-dollar bills. Later that year, Warhol expanded his silkcreening experimentation with the photo-silkscreen process in paintings such as .Baseball. (August 1962, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City).

The importance of .200 One Dollar Bills. goes beyond the use of silkscreen and its history of ownership to another long-lasting cornerstone of Warhol’s aesthetic practice: seriality.

The apparent simplicity and naiveté of Warhol’s work and the initial criticism of it as too readily recognizable and too accessible to qualify as art has long been confounded. As one who appreciated irony, Warhol could enjoy the controversy of his ultimate recognition and success, as well as his deeply significant influence on younger artists that followed him in the 20th Century. As the decades pass, Warhol’s place in the pantheon of American artists becomes ever more strongly established and the rare major works from the inception of his 'Pop Art' aesthetics, such as .200 One Dollar Bills., are testaments to a pivotal moment in art history.

Fernand Léger's 'Les Trois Musiciens'

Fernand Léger's 'Les Trois Musiciens' oil on canvas will be up for auction at Sotheby's New York. This work is part of Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale. It carries an estimate of $2 to $3 million dollars. Fernand Léger painted this work in 1932. Fernand Léger's 'Les Trois Musiciens' is one of the first times that we see Fernand Léger devote so much of his canvas to vibrant color. The vestiges of Purism and the shadowy gradations of his Surrealist-era compositions were slowly fading out of focus as he turned his artistic attention to the explosive power of a bright palette. In the years that followed his completion of the present work, Fernand Léger would increasingly invest his large-formatted canvases with broad swathes of unmodulated color. The present work marks one of his first and most successful applications of the technique.

Casa Chaves

Peruvian architect 'Miguel Rodrigo Masure' created the 'Casa Chavez' in 1958. This South American modernist gem has remained pretty much of the radar during the last 50 years. This minimal modern house is part of our forgotten modern architecture series where we pay respect to absolutely brilliant but unfortunately totally forgotten modern architects. These striking architectural drawings from the 1950's and 1960's feature beautiful minimal white modern houses with simple geometric forms and all white facades. Everything perfectly balanced.

'Casa Chavez' was completed in Lima Peru in the late 1950s. 'Casa Chavez' features minimal translucent spaces. The architecture of the home embraces nature with its expansive glass windows. The house is composed of two connection volumes and a net horizontal plane.

The approach of 'Casa Chavez' is in the same minimal style of Marcel Breuer. Mazuré Rodrigo's work was also influenced by the work of Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe, among other architects who visited Latin America in those years.

The house is structured based on an orderly grid of columns. The ground floor, stone-lined or hidden by the landscape, helps to accentuate the light purist volumes. The roof is flat with no perceptible slope. The edges of the roof are topped by an elegant aluminum frame.

It is such a tragedy that for the most part only North American and European modern architects received great fame, with the exception of Oscar Niemeyer perhaps.

The architecture by Miguel Rodrigo Masure shows that there were plenty of modernist thinkers all over the world during the middle of the twentieth century; many of them did not receive the credit they deserved.

So while architects like Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, Eichler, Cliff May and Raphael Soriano received plenty of attention and press in the USA, their South American colleagues simply never received any press (Benedikt Taschen: start your presses).
